Abstract:
Solzhenitsyn has been described both as an antisemite and as pro-Jewish. There is some psychological validity in both views, although he is, properly speaking, neither. The emotional conflict of his childhood - between his religious, anti-Bolshevik family and the ideology of the regime, represented by his fervently communist Jewish classmates - created a "Jewish shadow identity". Brings examples from his novels and other writings which show sympathy or even identification with Jews, as well as a desire to repress this identification in a manner which may be viewed as antisemitic.
