Abstract:
Discusses "Adversus Judaeos" literature produced in the German language during the late medieval period in the Holy Roman Empire. The first works were created in the 14th century, and constituted seven texts, among them two treatises, two disputations, two rhymed speeches, and an epistle, based on Latin models from the ancient period to the 14th century. Argues that, although this period was characterized by strong Christian anti-Judaism, these texts, for the most part, did not include aggressive polemics. One exception was the treatise "Von der juden irrsall", in which Jews were declared heretics and, as such, were at the mercy of the Inquisition. Generally, the intention of "Adversus Judaeos" literature consisted of argumentative apologetics for Christian beliefs against Jewish objections. Demonstrates that, besides having the role of the hated unbeliever, Jews and the Jewish religion had a certain impact on Christians, especially laymen; therefore, from the Christian side, there was a need for such polemics.
