Abstract:
In the "Nisko" action, transports were directed to Nisko from Vienna, Ostrawa, and Katowice at the end of 1939. Discusses one of the transports from Ostrawa (317 men) which did not reach Nisko; the Jews were first interned in Sosnowiec, and then 275 of the men were transferred to Vyhne in Slovakia in February 1940. These Jews were mainly Polish citizens who lived in Czechoslovakia before World War II. Describes the conditions of life in the camp, which were not very harsh; e.g. the Jews could work outside the camp, they could leave the camp for family visits, a school and kindergarten were organized there, etc. In 1942, Vyhne became a labor camp. The prisoners remained there and were not deported to the death camps. This camp existed up to August 1944, when, with the Slovak uprising, the prisoners were freed.
