Abstract:
A study of Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries today, showing that the region is not a hotbed of racist extremism. The situation is not very different from that in Western Europe, although much needs to be done in countries that are now or soon will be members of the European Union: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Racist extremists are increasingly mobilizing independently rather than as part of larger groups, and racist parties are important politically only in Romania. Skinheads are significant only in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland. All of the CEE countries have legal provisions against hate speech and racial incitement. Today, racism is not considered a major issue, although everywhere there are racist elements in mainstream political discourse. While the mainstream media keep a distance from racism, the Internet offers it broad possibilities. Recently, in some countries, there has been a stress on Holocaust education. Antisemitic prejudice is no longer predominant. However, antisemitism and Holocaust denial are more widespread among elites in CEE countries than among those in the West.
