Abstract:
The Second World War and the early postwar years were crucial for the formation of contemporary Polish-Jewish relations. Different experiences and expectations aggravated those relations after the war. The Jews tend to emphasize wartime Polish antisemitism and complain that Poles did not help the Jews enough during the Holocaust, while the Poles hold a stereotypic image of Jews as the main supporters of communism, they believe that others (the USSR, the West) are more guilty toward the Jews, and that Jews slander Poland worldwide. Both Jews and Poles have focused on their own wartime sufferings, disregarding those of the other side. Two memories of World War II developed. Both Poles and Jews created a new civic religion from the war, accuse each other of the theft of suffering, and do not want to know about each other.
