Abstract:
Discusses the expulsion of 15 Jewish musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1938. During the first wave of expulsion in March 1938, the head of the state opera announced that non-Aryan soloists could no longer be included in the playing schedule. The following musicians were affected by the new regulaton: Arnold Rosé, Siegfried Friedrich Buxbaum, Lothar Wallerstein, Carl Alwin, Georg Maliniak, Otto Janowitz, and Walter Stiassny. The next stage of dismissals, several days later, included eight musicians who were "Jewish" according to Nazi definitions. A third wave, in May 1938, concerned "Mischlinge", political undesirables, partners in mixed marriages, and Jewish foreigners. Nine among the expelled musicians succeeded in emigrating; six were murdered during the Holocaust. States that the Jewish musicians who were expelled and/or murdered have been excluded from official discourse to this day.
