Abstract:
Examines the activities of the two Ukrainian-born German scholars. Before and during World War II they conducted surveys of the German ethnic minority in the USSR, especially in the German agricultural colonies in Ukraine. The surveys, which began as an academic project and were motivated by academic interest and compassion for German brethren in Ukraine oppressed by the Soviet regime, came to serve Nazi goals in the war years. Both Leibbrandt and Stumpp adopted Nazi-style racism and antisemitism. In 1941 Leibbrandt called for liquidation of the Jews as a punishment for the deportation of the Volga Germans by the Soviets. Stumpp's "village reports, " compiled by his "special command" in Ukraine in 1941, indirectly documented the annihilation of Jews in the mixed German-Jewish settlements. After the war, Leibbrandt and Stumpp settled in the U.S.
