Abstract:
Although in the Reformed Church of Zürich liberal theology predominated, its views of Judaism were the traditional ones: rejection of the Pharisees and of all post-biblical Judaism, with its alleged emphasis on the Law of the Torah and "justification through works" in contrast to Christian spirituality and love. Exemplifies this view in texts by leading theologians and in textbooks for religious instruction in schools. The rejection of Judaism had political consequences in the prohibition of "shehitah" (Jewish ritual slaughter) in 1893 (still in force today) and the refusal to recognize this "sect" as a religion with the same right as other religions to receive support by the city.
