Abstract:
Discusses the 1892 "Judenflinten Prozess" (Jewish rifles trial), in which the antisemitic demagogue Hermann Ahlwardt was found guilty of slander for contending that a Jewish factory owner sold faulty rifles to the German army. Stresses that the correct conclusion of the trial was largely for the wrong reason - raison d'etat, and that press reactions tended also to deal with issues other than antisemitism. Concludes that, in the long run, the trial was a failure; the court was not a useful means for opposing antisemitism. Not only was Ahlwardt elected to the Reichstag, but the trial only discredited radical "Radauantisemitismus" while it tended to grant legitimacy to moderate antisemitism. Questions whether judicial means are useful in fighting the social movement of antisemitism.
