Abstract:
Ahlwardt (1846-1914) was a firebrand ("Radauantisemit") in the German antisemitic movement in the early 1890s. He had an enthusiastic following, although he was rejected by the estabished antisemitic parties. He held that the only legitimate property was that produced by work and creativity. Jews were averse to work and incapable of creativity; they acquired wealth by devious means, cheating and exploiting the honest German worker, and conspired to attain dominance over the German economy. Their illegitimate wealth should be confiscated by the state and they themselves banished. Ahlwardt later developed theories structurally similar, but with the Jesuits and finally with American trusts taking the place of the Jews as conspiring to take over the German economy.
