Abstract:
A revised version of a paper presented at the 18th Annual Scholars' Conference on the Church Struggle and the Holocaust, Washington, DC, March 1988. Surveys recent developments in attitudes within the Polish Catholic Church and intellectual circles toward the Jews. Notes an increase of interest in the Jewish cultural heritage and in Polish-Jewish topics. Remarks, however, that this interest does not include a critical reassessment of the role of Catholicism in the history of antisemitism in Poland, and its implication in Poles' attitudes toward Jews during the Nazi occupation. Considers that, in Poland, the very question of a generalized moral responsibility for the fate of the Polish Jews is absent. Suggests that this is a result of local historical experience and of the ways the Holocaust entered the national memory.
