Abstract:
In summer 1941 an SS training camp was established in the Polish village Trawniki. Between 3,000-5,000 Russian war prisoners received instruction there and were employed from 1942 as guards in concentration camps or joined the commandos in the ghettos. These Russians, mostly Ukrainians, were known for their cruelty, and wherever the "Trawnikis" were involved atrocities took place. Most of the "Trawnikis" remained anonymous; less than 500 names are known. Their contention that they were forced to commit brutalities is not relevant, as they mostly acted out of Jew-hatred and sadism. Deplores the fact that a great number of "Trawnikis" were never prosecuted.
