Abstract:
Translation of a paper presented at the conference "Christendom and Its Discontents", Los Angeles, UCLA, January 1991. Discusses the reference by Peter Brown, in his book "Il culto dei santi" (1981), to the arrival of St. Stephen's relics in Minorca, 417, which resulted in the forced conversion of the "unclean" Jews. Questions the use of the term "unclean", even if quoted from bishop Severus's letter of 418, a unique and biased description of the anti-Jewish violence. States that the events were the result of a power struggle amongst early Christians between supporters of the cult of Stephen Martyr, allegedly killed by Jews, and Judeo-Christians supporting the cult of the Maccabees.
Note:
Refers to Peter Brown's "The Cult of the Saints" (1981), in his passage on the forced conversion of the "unclean" Jews in 417. States that the events were the result of a power struggle amongst early Christians between supporters of the cult of Stephen Martyr, allegedly killed by Jews, and Judeo-Christians supporting the cult of the Maccabees.
