Abstract:
Examines the Catholic antisemitic milieu in Germany between 1870-1945. During the "Kulturkampf", the Catholic Center Party identified its liberal attackers with the Jews and became fiercely antisemitic. After 1879, following an alliance with the state, Catholic antisemitism was less blatant, but it played a part in creating the atmosphere in which Nazism became respectable. Neither the Church nor the Catholic parties supported the Nazi Party, but they took no moral stand against its antisemitism.
