Abstract:
Ca. 75% of the Jews in the Netherlands, both indigenous and foreign, perished in the Holocaust, which is by far the greatest percentage of Holocaust victims in all the Western European countries. Dismisses various explanations for this fact by historians, such as the country's geography, deference to authority on the part of Jews or the Dutch bureaucracy, and lack of active resistance until mid-1943. Based on data collected by Croes with Peter Tammes, proposes to compare the rates of Jewish survival according to the Dutch provinces and specific localities. Analysis of the data suggests that the only factor which can account for variation in the rates is the degree of activity of the Sicherheitspolizei in hunting down hidden Jews in the given provinces.
