Abstract:
The author focuses on the memoirs of the Polish-Jewish writer Horacy Safrin (1899–1980), a graduate from the gymnasium in Stanisławów. Safrin became famous for his satires, and translations of Jewish literature into Polish as well as from Polish into Yiddish. Today he is remembered for his anthology of Jewish humour Przy szabasowych świecach. Humor żydowski (1963), which so far has been published in several editions. In his memoirs, Safrin presents the childhood of the boy from a well-off Jewish family, recalls strict teachers, the upbringing methods of his mother and father, his friends and his rivalry with Polish and Ukrainian peers. All this is conveyed in a light-hearted style, full of exceptional humor.
