Abstract:
Describes the tense relations between Jews and non-Jews in the Hellenistic cities of the land of Israel during Caligula's reign, and particularly the attempt to install an idol in the Temple in Jerusalem. This particular initiative came from the city of Yavneh (Jamnia) and was instigated by Helikon the Egyptian, the Emperor's freedman, and the actor Apelles of Ashkelon. Their hatred of the Jews rested on a longstanding local tradition. The Syrian governor Petronius prevented execution of the rescript. But after Caligula's death the Hellenistic cities, in order to anger and attack the Jews, set up an idol in Dor and, during Nero's reign, in Caesarea.
