Abstract:
During the Nazi period, a specific understanding of the Bible helped some Christians develop a spirituality with which they were able to withstand the Nazi "Aryan" mythology and to act in defense of Jews and Judaism. Discusses the lives and views of two theologians, the Lutheran Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) and the Catholic Josef Kentenich (1885-1968), who defended the Old Testament against an attempt by Nazi theologians to remove it from the biblical canon. Both emphasized the Judaic roots of Christianity and the Jewishness of Jesus, identified Christ with the suffering Jewish people, and warned Christians against a new "fall" which might be caused by supporting Nazi treatment of the Jews. Both were imprisoned by the Nazis. With their rejection of a triumphalist, de-Hebraicized Christianity, they can be pioneering figures for a post-Holocaust theology.
