Abstract:
Takes issue with scholars, such as the philosopher Giorgio Agamben, who write about the Holocaust in a way that insults the suffering of the victims, only in order to develop a thesis to its logical end. In order to really understand the experience of Auschwitz, one has to enter into it, which almost no one but the survivors themselves can do; and they cannot communicate it except by giving concrete details, calling them by name, and for the rest keeping silent. Historians who stick to the details, authors of literary works, and historians whose works border on the literary, may potentially (though rarely) approximate the reality of the Holocaust.
