Abstract:
Holocaust memorialization in Germany has taken the shape of museums, monuments, and commemorative plaques. The latter are dispersed in various urban spaces; they 'force' the visitors or the occasional passers-by to take part, e.g. to step on "Stolpersteine" or to sit on public benches. These memorials use metaphors derived from the world of the theater, creating a reverse role-play; the public's role is transformed from passive audience to participant. Presents several of these sites, analyzing their metaphorical language and discussing the political/public debates that have accompanied them since their conception.
