Abstract:
Discusses the decision of the Israeli government to append the word "gevurah" (heroism) to Yom Hashoah and to commemorate the Holocaust on the day of the liquidation of the Warsaw ghetto, thereby stressing Jewish resistance. Notes that, throughout the ages, Jews in the diaspora generally did not resist because of their unwillingness to internalize the hostility of their local environments and their continuing hope for redemption. Contends that the Holocaust played an important role in God's overall plan for the Jewish people, and therefore it is irrelevant whether individual Jews resisted or not. The passive reaction of many Jews to the Nazi onslaught was valid and not shameful, and those who resisted were sometimes motivated by Polish rather than Jewish nationalism. While the acts of the resisters are praiseworthy, there are no values to be learned from them. Asserts that there is no real tragedy in Jewish history, because the Jews are always strengthened afterwards.
