Abstract:
In the Babylonian Talmud tractate Sanhedrin, one finds a tale about a creation ofan artificial calf by two sages who dealt with Hilkhot Yeṣirah, the Laws ofFormation. Already in the 11th century CE the words 'Laws of Formation' wereconnected to the short, enigmatic and influential treatiseSefer Yeṣirah, the Bookof Formation, which depicts the creation of the world by use of the twenty-twoletters of the Hebrew alphabet. The connection between the two is of greatconsequence in determining the period in whichSefer Yeṣirah was edited as wellas its history of acceptance and as such should be examined in a careful manner. In scholarly literature, the question of the relation between the laws of formationand the Book of Formation was mentioned by a few scholars, but has never beendiscussed in a comprehensive manner. The main purpose of this paper is to addressthis issue. The conclusion of the article that there is no such connection is two pronged.Sefer Yeṣirah is an abbreviation of a longer title, which was well known in the 10th century CE:Sefer Yeṣirat ha'Olam, the Book of the Formation of the World.Hilkhot Yeṣirah, on the other hand, does not refer to a title of a book but rather toa set of rules about formation, like the laws of Shabbat and the laws of witchcraft, which are mentioned in the same Talmudic discussion.
