Abstract:
Examines reactions of Polish Jewish immigrants in France to the rising wave of antisemitism in Poland, especially during the second half of the 1930s. The two main Yiddish-language dailies, the moderately Zionist "Parizer Haynt" and the communist "Naye Presse", both blamed the Polish government (and not the populace) for pogroms in Przytyk, Warsaw, Brest, and other cities. Describes how the press, having advocated self-defense at first, appealed for intervention by international governments and organizations as the situation in Poland deteriorated. From April 1938 on, their optimism turned into disappointment with the world. also discusses different views on the solution to the "Jewish problem" and how the press helped raise funds for persecuted Polish Jews.
