Abstract:
Using new data and new methods, Kupovetsky corrects the estimates made in his article published in "Jews in Eastern Europe" 24 (1994). After taking into account that the results of the Soviet census of 1939 were distorted (on Stalin’s orders), correcting somewhat the estimates of the Jewish population in the annexed territories both before and after the war, and examining postwar Soviet data on the assimilation of the Jews, concludes that the Jewish losses during the war period must be evaluated as 2,733,000 - of which 1,112,000 were killed in the territories within the pre-1939 Soviet borders ("vostochniki"), and 1,621,000 in the territories annexed in 1939-40 ("zapadniki").
