Abstract:
Describes the state of the Jewish community in Leningrad (ca. 109,000 in 1989) based on interviews and personal impressions following a visit in January 1990. Discusses "the Jewish problem" as a factor in the political struggle between the patriotic and democratic camps. The patriotic groups expressed antisemitism in propaganda speeches, in the press, and in the founding of a separate writers' association. Still, in the elections of March 1990 the patriots were roundly defeated. In early 1990 rumors of an impending pogrom were rampant, and the Jews became frantic. Half of the city's Jewish population was preparing to emigrate. Many had already left. Under these conditions it is difficult to develop Jewish cultural institutions, even though it is now permitted.
