Abstract:
Analyzes demographic data showing the growth of the Jewish population in Poland from the 15th century to the end of the 19th century. Estimates, based on data from tax registers found in works by various historians of Polish Jewry, that just before the Cossack revolt of 1648 there were about 500,000 Jews. As a result of the massacres during the revolt, and the wars with Russia and Sweden, by the end of the 1650s the number of Jews was reduced to 200,000.
