Abstract:
Argues that, when researching rescue activities of the World Jewish Congress during the Holocaust, it is necessary to keep in mind the lack of Jewish political power at the time, and the lack of a Jewish state. Members of the WJC attempted to develop diplomatic ties in spite of this lack. In 1939 the WJC office in Geneva set up a committee which occasionally made contact with the Nazis in attempts to save Jews, and helped Jews living under Nazi occupation by sending them packages and false passports. Discusses, also, conflicts between the WJC and other Jewish organizations at the time, and activities of the WJC after the war.
