Abstract:
Summarizes recent re-interpretations of Paul's pronouncements on the Jews. S.G. Hall and J.S. Siker, in an effort to revise anti-Jewish theology after the Holocaust, interpret Romans 11 to mean that the Jews are included in salvation, and not rejected in favor of the Gentiles as former commentators held; their arguments, however, are not altogether convincing. F. Watson explains that Paul was striving to found a new sect in which Jews and Gentiles would form one community with a common worship; therefore he had to denounce those Jews who remained outside. Maccoby sees Paul as the source of Christian anti-Judaism through the ages. Concludes that as long as Christians adhere to the teachings of Paul, no genuine Christian-Jewish dialogue can take place.
