Abstract:
Based on the last chapter of his book "Hetz ba-arafel" (1998). Asserts that the prevalent presentation by historians of Ben-Gurion's attitude toward the situation of the Jews in Europe both before and during World War II (it is alleged that Ben-Gurion alienated himself from European Jewry and abandoned them during the war, while instrumentalizing their tragedy and monopolizing them in the struggle of the Zionist movement for a national home in Palestine) hangs too much on two accidental and disturbing utterances by Ben-Gurion which did not reflect his real emotional stance and actual deeds as can be seen in available documentation. Attributes the distorted presentation of Ben-Gurion's approach to a misunderstanding of Zionism's attitude toward the Diaspora; a misconception of the Yishuv's limitations in its two enormous endeavors - the struggle in Palestine and aid to European Jewry; the widespread image of Ben-Gurion which presented him as a one-sided, unsympathetic figure; and the transference of political and psychological stances from the Israeli political arena to the public and historiographic discourse regarding rescue during the Holocaust.
