Abstract:
Juxtaposes the 12th-century Spanish convert Petrus Alfonsi as a kind of medieval "Enlightenment-style" thinker with Ramon Llull as a medieval Spanish "postmodern" thinker - in particular, in their attitude toward the non-Christian religions. Contends that it was Alfonsi who, with his treatise "Dialogi contra Iudaeos", initiated the modern tradition of antisemitism. In this work, Alfonsi rejects grammar as an art which only divides peoples for the highest art, logic, which unifies them. Judaism is the religion of grammar, vernacular and historical, whereas Christianity is the religion of logic; the Jews, as a people of grammar, perceive the Old Testament literally. Alfonsi was the first writer in Latin literature to state that the Jews are not mistaken but are conscious enemies of Christ; they killed Jesus in full knowledge that he was God.
