Abstract:
This article compares similar language in 1 Kings 21 and the Khorsabad Cylinder of Sargon II to argue that the two accounts are expressions of the same royal trope of land acquisition. Although the accounts of Ahab and Sargon II acquiring land have opposite outcomes, both texts use the trope to demonstrate the qualities of each king. Comparison of the two texts indicates that 1 Kings 21 represents a prophetic inversion of the royal ideology we find expressed in the Khorsabad Cylinder.
