Abstract:
The article offers a reconstruction of the discursive environment in which the story of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19) was read when it first began to be disseminated. Through the double contextualization of the story – historical and literary –, we see how the destruction of the two cities was discussed in relation to political and social issues of the time. The discussion raises issues concerning immigration and the inscription of the patriarchal order in the land. Like the prophets, the narrators of Genesis use Sodom and Gomorrah to criticize the existing order, but they maintain an objective distance from the facts, and thus offer the narrative as a platform for discussing these subjects.
