Abstract:
At the end of the Spanish Civil War and the beginning of World War II, Max Aub’s Spanish experience interfered with his Jewish belonging. While he famously chronicled the history of the Spanish Civil War, he refrained from writing equally prominent texts about the Holocaust. Taking into consideration Aub’s works of fiction, as well as his plays, essays, and diaries, this article argues that the author decided to write mostly about events that he had personally witnessed. Instead of adapting to a Jewish identity defined by others, Aub chose to interpret his own history and that of Europe by addressing the political events he had himself experienced. His experience of war, internment, and escape were so upsetting that there was no space to understand the full dimension of the Nazi crimes.
