Abstract:
If the violence of Jesus of Nazareth is generally passed over in silence, that of John of Patmos in his Revelation, sometimes called the Christian War Scroll, has always been acknowledged and criticized. Yet this was a quite understandable reaction to the traumatic experience of the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 ce. In the case of the Little Synoptic Apocalypse (Mark 13:1-37 par.), eschatological violence is but an outcome of the First Judeo-Roman War, while in the Apocalypse of Peter it is a direct consequence of the Bar Kokhba revolt. We propose to put these apocalyptic texts into a historical perspective, which will also help to better bring out the philo- or anti-Judean attitudes of their authors and communities.
