Abstract:
This article addresses a kabbalistic lithograph with the title The Origin of the Rites and Worship of the Hebrews, which was published by Max Wolff, a Jewish minister, in New York, 1859. Based on contemporary sources, it will be demonstrated how a cross-denominational interest in the subject prompted both the publishing of the work and public lecturing on it by several individuals, amongst them renowned Christian clergymen and Freemasons. The reception of the lithograph, offering a panoramic view of Judaism through the secrets of Kabbalah, attests to the wide interest it elicited in antebellum America.
