Abstract:
This short paper compares Hebrew and Egyptian text passages on the role of birds as disposers of negative forces. Lev 14,49-53 describes the cleansing of a house from leprosy by letting fly a bird. In the Egyptian case, P. Ramesseum 3 B 33, a swallow symbolically takes away a childhood sickness. Comparable motifs are also found in Hittite and Babylonian texts.
