Abstract: This article presents a general overview of opinions expressed by Jerome (347-419) on the various aspects of language and languages. The article situates Jerome within his historical and intellectual context. It deals with his “linguistic sensitivity,” the categorial and terminological apparatus which he could have adopted from Donatus, his grammar teacher in Rome, and with the challenge he faced in the study of Semitic languages. Subsequently, the article discusses Jerome’s views on the genealogical primacy of Hebrew and the affinity within the (Chamito-)Semitic languages (Hebrew ~ Aramaic, Punic ~ Phoenician ~ Hebrew, Egyptian ~ Hebrew ~ “Canaanite”), as well as on cases of affinity between non-Semitic languages (the Celtic of Trier ~ Galatian, Latin ~ Greek). Lastly, the article provides some examples of contrastive or “comparative” remarks formulated by Jerome on levels of “linguistic description” other than that of “language” as a whole, namely of the sentence (i.e. the syntactic level) and the word.
