Abstract: Discusses reactions to knowledge on the destruction of European Jewry which reached the youth movements Hanoar Haoved, Hashomer Hatzair, and Hamahanot Haolim in Eretz Israel, as expressed in their organs "Bama’aleh", "Al Hahomah", and "Sefer Hamahanot Haolim". The youth movements identified with the Jews who were suffering persecution in Europe, and felt it was incumbent upon them to work harder in order to build and develop the Land of Israel, not despite the Holocaust but because of it. Hashomer Hatzair, being an international movement, expressed a deeper agony as members of its movement were murdered in Europe, and knowledge of their heroic deeds (rescue and resistance) filtered abroad. But Hashomer Hatzair emphasized, when the war against the fascists was over, that the final victory would only come with the defeat of capitalism. While the other movements wished to bring all of the survivors to Israel, Hashomer Hatzair discussed leaving some of the survivors in Europe to carry on the fight.
