Abstract:
In this paper, the connection between Gen 2:7 and the interpretation of the Biblical Hebrew term נפשׁ is examined. It is argued that the notion of Gen 2:7 as an anthropological locus classicus has promoted this as a central passage when it comes to assessing what נפשׁ means. In this way, what can be termed a monistic interpretation of נפשׁ has become commonplace. This has turned into an assumption about the meaning of נפשׁ, affecting the interpretation of נפשׁ as a general concept in the Hebrew Bible. There is, however, linguistic evidence defying the monistic interpretation of נפשׁ.
