Abstract:
Analyzes Jewish communal efforts to counter Nazi verbal abuse, particularly in the Jewish press (the "C.V. Zeitung", the "Jüdische Rundschau", and the "Israelitisches Familienblatt"), and in rabbinical sermons and articles in the press. They spoke of the Jewish people and faith forming an indivisible entity; that the Jews were charged with creating a moral world order; and that Jews endured suffering when they failed their God. This romanticization of the Jew was a necessity imposed by the Jew’s dehumanization at the hands of the Nazis, and was designed to strengthen the Jews’ capacity for resistance. This psychological scaffolding evolved as one of the major tasks of Jewish journalism, as well as of the community’s spiritual leadership.
