Abstract: The first attempts at memorialization of the Holocaust in the former Soviet territories began immediately with the dissolution of the USSR. In this period, such activities were viewed exclusively as a means of strengthening Jewish identity. In 1992 the Russian Research and Educational Holocaust Center was established in Moscow; it centralized this work and began to engage in research. Dwells on the public reception of films on the Holocaust, both feature films and documentaries, in Russia. "Schindler's List" failed to attract public attention; however, subsequent films ("La vita è bella", "The Pianist", etc.) were well-received. In 1995 the first Russian-made documentary on the Holocaust, "The Ghetto of Brest" was produced. Other documentaries followed; e.g. Pavel Chukhrai's "Children from the Abyss", and one film in Savva Kulish's series "Forgive and Farewell to the 20th Century". Dwells, also, on research and educational projects dealing with the Holocaust and with commemoration.
