Abstract:
Economic antisemitism, which manifested itself in the Aryanization or "Slovakization" of some Jewish businesses and the liquidation of the rest, was a crucial component in the policies of the wartime Slovakian regime. After the proclamation of autonomy of Slovakia within the Czechoslovak state in October 1938, economically and religiously conditioned antisemitism became part of the country's official ideology; Slovakia's independence in March 1939 only codified this situation. The radicalization of the regime's anti-Jewish economic policies was marked by the second Aryanization Law in November 1940. Reports sent by local administrations to the central government reveal that the reactions of the non-Jewish majority to Aryanization were mainly positive, and the only negative comments concerned its slow path and the corruption in its course. Notes that there were some individual protests by Slovaks against the Aryanization of businesses that belonged to Jewish neighbors or friends, and that there was greater compassion toward Jews on the part of non-Jews during the deportations in March-October 1942.
