Abstract:
Discusses Holocaust denial in France from 1945 to the present. Theorized there by Maurice Bardèche and Paul Rassinier in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Holocaust denial was brought to public awareness by Robert Faurisson two decades later. Emphasizes Faurisson's importance as a renewer of the image of revisionist discourse, which he claims is unpolitical and corresponds to scientific truth. Argues that the breaktrough of this view constitutes an important victory for revisionist discourse, and mentions several cases in which it has been used as a weapon against the Gaysset Law (1990), which penalizes Holocaust denial. Shows close links between Faurisson and Jean-Marie Le Pen's Front National, and contends that the party continues to embrace Holocaust denial, albeit more discreetly, under Marine Le Pen. Notes that the comedian Dieudonné, by inviting Faurisson to join him onstage in 2008, opened a new page in the history of French Holocaust denial. Presently, Holocaust denial also appears on French Internet sites.
