Abstract:
Recounts the participation of Jews in the resistance against Nazism and fascism in Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece, and Bulgaria. States that the participation in the resistance was very high (4,500 in Yugoslavia, more than 1000 in Greece, more than 400 in Bulgaria; there are no records for Albania). The Jews mainly joined local, not Jewish, partisan organizations, most of them leftist. Jewish partisans took part in guerrilla warfare, but also as doctors, nurses, couriers, or technicians. In general, and where it was possible, the local population assisted the families of Jewish partisans by hiding them in places controlled by the resistance. An outstanding example was Elias Barzilai, the Chief Rabbi of Athens. Nazi functionaries ordered him to deliver a list of the Jews residing in Athens. Rabbi Barzilai destroyed all of the community's records and escaped the city to join the resistance.
