Abstract: Describes the accommodation of the Dutch to the German occupation - e.g. the government, the bureaucrats, the police, the economic sector, the Jewish Council, the act of deportation - to the detriment of the Dutch people, and of the Jews in particular. Discusses, also, flawed reactions after the war to the returning survivors - not only of the Jews and others who were deported, but also to the returnees from Indonesia who were interned by the Japanese. The returnees were virtually disregarded, not welcomed back and hardly got any aid. Relates to the lengthy period after the war until the Dutch began to "cope with the past", only in the late 1980s. Examines and attempts to explain what happened during the war years and afterwards, and why.
