Abstract:
Holocaust memory is the strongest factor in preserving Jewish identity amongst Jews of the former USSR. However, the level of knowledge about it among students of Jewish origin, full or partial, in Russia and Ukraine is poor. From the 2000s, the Jewish Agency initiated the educational program "Massa shorashim", in the course of which high school students visit Western and Central Ukraine, regions which were major hubs of Jewish life and culture before World War II and the location of the perpetration of the Nazi Holocaust during the war. Summarizes the results of research conducted by Epstein, Khanin, and Likhachev in 2007-8, as well as some other works of research, which aimed to gauge the level of knowledge about the Holocaust amongst youth in Russia and Ukraine, especially to see the effect of the "Massa shorashim" trips in this regard. Concludes that for the great majority of young people the Holocaust is seen as a remote event which does not concern them. Neither is there a wish to reflect on this unique event, and to comprehend it. The role of the "grandmothers" (i.e. the generation which lived through World War II) in the transmission of knowledge on the Holocaust to the young is almost nil. Criticizes the "Massa shorashim" trips, which, due to various factors, failed to improve this situation.
