Abstract:
Examines coverage of the "Kristallnacht" pogrom in Germany by twenty daily newspapers in North Carolina, including reports on the events in Germany and public reactions to them in the state. Juxtaposes this press reaction with that in the daily press of northern California, New Mexico, New York (outside of New York City), and Wisconsin. Shows that, in comparison to the other states, North Carolina's press coverage of the pogrom was by far more intense and detailed; the attitude of the reports towards the anti-Jewish violence was unambiguously negative; and the reactions of readers, as reflected in letters to editors, were mainly condemning. Newspapers in California, New Mexico, and New York offered less intense coverage of the pogrom and focused largely on its effects on foreign relations; public reaction to the events, as in North Carolina, was mainly negative. Reports in Wisconsin newspapers were the most limited. The press minimized the number of reports, reminded readers that U.S. immigration laws should not be challenged, provided misleading headlines to articles, and presented editorials that questioned reports on the plight of German Jews. Surmises that the press coverage in the five states was consistent with how newspaper writers and editors perceived their readers' biases and belief systems.
