Abstract: Discusses views of Holocaust historians who contend that the Holocaust was a result of eugenics and "bio-politics", which began in the 18th century and gradually became more popular. Several European countries and many states in the U.S. passed legislation in the late 19th-early 20th centuries concerning forced sterilization, e.g. of criminals and the mentally ill. The Nazis took the murderous potential of modern bio-politics to its extreme. Focuses on the views of Zygmunt Bauman, a functionalist who emphasizes the roles of modernization and German bureaucracy in the Holocaust. Menschenfreund, however, points out that Nazi irrationality concerning the annihilation of the Jews (e.g. using trains to deport Jews rather than for the military effort toward the end of the war) shows that antisemitic ideology was the most important factor in the Holocaust.
