Abstract:
Surveys the life and activities of Rabbi Dr. Joseph Zvi Carlebach (1883-1942), who was born in Lübeck and served as a rabbi in various places in Germany until he became chief rabbi of Hamburg in 1937. In 1938-39 five of his children emigrated; in December 1941 he was deported with his wife and four other children to the Jungfernhof concentration camp. In March 1942 he, his wife, and three of his children were killed in a massacre, with many members of his Hamburg community. Discusses halakhic rulings of Carlebach concerning dietary laws and matters of life or death in 1939-42. He allowed the eating of forbidden foods in order to save one's life, taking upon himself the responsibility involved in making such a decision. States that he could have saved himself and his family in 1941, but chose to be deported with his community. Pp. 171-179 present letters written by Carlebach and documents concerning his activities.
