Abstract: In response to Cynthia Ozick's essay "Who Owns Anne Frank?" and to a 1991 essay by Alvin H. Rosenfeld about receptions of the diary by different groups (Americans, Germans, and Jews), argues that everyone owns Anne Frank. Discusses reinterpretations of the famous Holocaust victim as a historical personage and a theatrical image, noting Melissa Muller's "Anne Frank: The Biography" and Philip Roth's "The Ghost Writer". Focuses on three American plays of the 1990s: Bernard Kops' "Dreams of Anne Frank", Cherie Bennett's teen-oriented "Anne Frank and Me", and Donald Marguiles' "The Model Apartment". Argues that insisting on Anne's "fixed" status as innocent victim would eliminate the possibility of reinterpreting her figure for post-Holocaust audiences.
Note: An shorter version appeared previously in "The Nation" (16 Nov 1998) 20-25.
